What is 10Questions?
10Questions is the first truly people-powered online candidate forum that seeks to involve millions of voters in prioritizing the questions they want answered, and moving politicians away from sound-bites to in-depth discussion of issues.
Why isn't 10Questions in my state?
We chose 43 of the most competitive U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and gubernatorial races across the country to include in this iteration of our experiment, as we couldn't cover every one. We think we did a good job, but know that we definitely missed a few. If you believe we've overlooked a critical state/race, please fill out this form, and we'll see what we can do.
Why do I have to sign in with a Google Account?
Identity is a big “problem†for online participation. By using a Google Account to sign in we have some sense of your existence as a unique individual. We do NOT collect your gmail address. In conjunction with OAuth, the Google sign in allows us access the Google technology that we use to count votes.
Simply put, signing in with Google helps us to verify your identity and facilitate a voting process that balances security and ease of use.
Does signing in with my Gmail account mean that you have my email?
No. Google’s federated login only provides us with verification that you have a valid Google account, and in conjunction with OAuth, it allows us access on your behalf to the Google technology that we use to count votes.
Simply put, signing in with Google helps us to verify your identity and facilitate a voting process that balances security and ease of use.
How do I submit a question?
Navigate to the forum of your choice from the 10Questions home page, using either the interactive map or the drop-down menu in the header--“Races†Once you’ve found a forum, simply click on the red “Ask Question†button, and follow the instructions. You can submit either a text question or a YouTube video.
To submit a text question, simply type in your question when prompted. To include a YouTube video, first, upload your video to YouTube. Then come back to 10questions with your video’s URL at the ready. You’ll be asked to provide this in order to link the two. Be sure to include a description of your video so that other visitors can find it using the search feature.
How do I find my question once it's added?
Use the search feature, found in the left column on the forum’s home page. Keep in mind, the search feature only searches the contents of submissions. So you can’t just search for your name. Instead, search for keywords that you included in the text of your submission or in the text description of your video.
You may use the search feature in conjunction with the ordering options and topics filter to further refine your search. For example, clicking on “New†will cause the submissions to be ordered in reverse chronological order, and choosing a topic from the “Topics†pull-down menu will limit results to submissions within the selected topic.
How do I find questions on issues I'm interested in?
Try using either the “Topics†pull-down menu or the search feature. The pull-down is found below the Questions tab and allows you to limit displayed content to the selected topic.
The search feature can be found in the left column of a forum’s main page and can be used to search the text of submissions.
Additionally, you may use the topic and search features in conjunction to further refine you results.
How do I share a question with others so they may vote on it?
If you move your cursor over the “Share†button above a given submission, you should see a selection options for sharing your content including email and social media such as Facebook and Twitter. If these don’t appear when you mouse over the button, simply click on it.
You can also embed a submission in a webpage or blog by using the "Embed" code found under each submission, and you can find a direct (permalink) to each submission in the “Link†field found below each submission.
How do I vote on a question to be asked?
If you think a question should be answered, click the thumbs up. If you think the question should be ignored, click the thumbs down. If you don't have an opinion, don't vote.
How do I vote on the candidates' replies?
Once the top questions have been chosen and the candidates start posting their replies, you will be able to view and vote on them by clicking the “Answers†link next to “Questions†on a fourm’s home page. If you think a reply actually answered the question, click the thumbs up. If you think it did not, click the thumbs down. If you don't have an opinion, don't vote.
Can I vote multiple times for the same question?
No. Visitors can vote on as many videos as they like, but only one vote will be allowed per Google Account. Additionally, the top questions will have their votes audited, taking additional factors into account to guard against anyone artificially stuffing the ballot box.
What's to stop organized groups from "gaming" the system?
You. 10questions is entirely egalitarian. If a group can mobilize its supporters to vote for a video en masse, their topic will benefit. However, the larger the number of overall participants, the more representative the top questions. Additionally, votes are limited to one per Google Account, and the the top ten questions will have their votes audited to further guard against ballot box stuffing.
Can third-party candidates participate?
If a third-party or independent candidate meets all of the following requirements, then they are welcome to participate in 10Questions.com.
-Achieved ballot status
-Have a website
-Competitively polling
This is an ambitious experiment conducted on limited resources, and as such, our outreach is focused only on the candidates that meet all of the above requirements.
How do I know my vote was counted?
When you vote on a submission, the counts below the video should be replaced with a feedback notice clarifying the status of your vote. Keep in mind that it can take a minute to update the vote tally for a specific submission. So if you vote on something and immediately reload the page, the vote count may not have had time to update.
